In a good way. Darkest of Days is a first person shooter coming from 8Monkey Labs. The premise? Go back in time to historical battles and bring modern weaponry with you. Fully automatic machine gun during the American Civil War? Combat shotgun in World War 2? You got it.
The developer is an unknown, but the video below give an idea of what to expect. Despite the originality of the premise, I can’t say that this looks like anything particularly exciting, but we’ll see. Also, the person playing in these videos looks like he’s as bad a first person shooter player as I am. That’s impressive.
Is this a joke? The tags say PC and Xbox 360, but the video looks like a PS1 game. The concept seems interesting, but after watching that video, I’ll be staying away from it. Unless of course it’s an easy 1000 GS.
Maybe its an Arcade title? It doesn’t look very pretty. Seems entertaining though.
Did you guys watch the HD version? It had some nice lighting and shadows going on, at least. Saying it looks like a PS1 game is bit of an exaggeration. The whole thing feels like a budget title. The repeated sound effects and less than stellar animations contribute to that feel for me. Another video I didn’t post because of language showed the character mowing down rows of soldiers with a machine gun and all of the enemies making the exact same death cry over and over. It was kind of comical, actually. Sounds like a small dev team is creating their first big game. If it comes out for $30 or $40 it might be worth it. I have a feeling that won’t happen though. Just like people watch and enjoy “B movies” I think there is room for “B games.”
I can’t watch the HD version, so I can concede that point. I can also say that the game didn’t look near as good as Turning Point, and we all know what a turd that game was. And of course they’re going to slap a $50-60 price tag on it. DEZ over at FOG was talking about how GI Joe was a discount title at $50, which is still too high.
Yeah, that’s a bit bad, but at least it’s not ARMA 2.

And the premise reminds me of the opening to “Timecop.” Remember that piece of crap?
“Timecop” was the exact same thing that I thought about. Except I actually liked that movie. I went to see it for my 13 or 14th birthday. Van Damme was the man back then, him and Siegal.
Oh yeah, I loved it too when I saw it, but I didn’t know any better back then… :p
This game looked alright from the trailer I saw but this makes it look really bad
It’s a PC game as well, I just downloaded the demo, I hope it’s fun.
Just played through the demo. There’s a few things wrong, but the bottom line is, it’s worth a rental at least.
Okay, now my list of things to say:
1. They try to make the whole time travel thing make sense, but it doesn’t
2. swearing, you think it might be all right; but then BAM! f-bomb. Wasn’t dropped into casual conversation though, which is good.
3. You have to pull up your map every time you get a new objective; it’s only on the HUD if you’re close enough.
4. It’s very good looking actually, the time travel bubbles you go through look great.
5. There’s no reason why it’s you who is chosen to save history itself.
6. Great humor, after you finish the mission, it does like a little training video thing about the weapons, and it was hilarious. Play the demo just to watch that movie.
And that’s all.
It may not look very pretty but I’d still give it a shot. The concept seems to be interesting. I’ll wait till it come down in price though. I don’t think I have ever hear of 8 monkey labs they might not have built this game on an up to date engine.
But it does look pretty.
