The Final Straw!

As I am writing this I am a whirlwind of emotions. Most of them are of hate. This morning started like any usual day off. I got up. did my morning ritual and then headed into the living room for a day of gaming. After an hour or so of playing Street Fighter 4 I noticed the screen flicker a little bit noticed lines down the screen. After checking to see if it was my TV that had went out I decided to turn off my xbox and then turn it back on. Well the green power light came on and then a single red ring in the bottom corner started flashing. The screen said please contact Xbox customer support and it also displayed E 74. (Which means my video card was done for)
After calling xbox support I find out my year warranty was up like last week, and I had this same problem last year when my original box (which I had sent for repair three different times) died. So now just over a year I have two systems crap out with the same problem which makes a total of around FIVE XBOX 360s I have went through. This is ridiculous! I have never in all my history of gaming gone through this many units.
So I have decided to join the dark side I will buy a new xbox arcade but it will be my first party game system, and if I want to do some online multiplayer I will get on xbox. I will be buying a ps3 in april if the price drop rumor is true if not before hand, and it will now be my main gaming system. I know some of you are saying, but the Xbox has an awesome community and all this other nonsense which is true, but hey I know the Playstation 3 is reliable and I won’t have to keep rebuying it over and over again. So I guess in end while I am not totally going to the dark side of gaming per se I am going to be like some really cool uber Jedi with a strong tie to the dark side of the force.
Well at least there are SOME intelligent people on this website. Good on you for finally choosing the best console! Don’t even bother buying an arcade use that money to get a PS3 now and don’t wait for the price drop.

I hate hearing about your 360. I got an arcade unit back just before Christmas with the new Jasper chip set. I have left it on running for two day straight with out any problems. The exterior of the box wasn’t even warm. IMO they got it right with the Jasper units. I think all of the Arcades should have the Jasper by now I don’t know about the other SKU’s though.

Sorry to hear about that. My 360 has had a lot of freezing issues lately. I hope it’s not on its last leg. I’ve passed the 1 year warranty and wouldn’t really have the $$ to fix the 360 right now.
It should not have taken this issue to make you want a PS3. All things aside, the PS3 is a great piece of hardware. It’s whirlwind of exlcusives in 2009 should have convinced you in December.

This site really needs a “No Troller/Flame” policy.
People can say what they like about Best Buy, but my extended warranty just helped me with this exact same problem last week. My Halo 3 360 did this after about 1 1/2 years and with my Best Buy PRP, I was able to trade it in for an Elite at the same price. I know that isn’t much consolation at this point, but I would highly recommend that if you do decide to buy another 360, get it at Best Buy and buy the extended warranty with it.
That sucks man, it happens to everyone sometime or another. Just so you know the PS3 has a Blu-Ray reading problem going around, which requires it being sent in.
Sorry to hear that. I liked the 360 when I owned it. But alot of people have had that RRD ALOT.
The PS3 is great. Good community also…. Also of people have ripped the system since day one. But I think after year 1 they really turned things around. The PS3 is great and is always getting better. Plus you get BLU RAY on the side. Alot of people write that off but seriously you will get excited to watch movies in BLU RAY :O

I find I am in the opposite boat. Trying to ignore the bad economy and buy an Xbox360 arcade in order to play some exclusives (L4D and GOW2)
I did hear a rumor that L4D was coming to PS3, but it cannot be soon enough!!!
dude that sucks. i really thought the RROD problem would have been fixed by now. i am a PS3 owner, and although their are a few irritations with the PS3, it is definitely a great system. i would choose it over an xbox any day.
Have fun loading updates for hours and don’t use home too much, cause we all know it is the best thing ever!!!!
Don’t forget, the “Darkside” always loses in the end.
PS3 fanboy = I am looking to pay too much for a console that has no good platformer’s or exclusive titles. Oh yes we all know metal gear is good but come on what are you going to play, the great KillZone? What a joke.
haha i got a feeling there might be one hell of a console war going down on these comments. still sucks what happened to ya man. i only rrod’d once and it was only about 9 months after i got my xbox and i havent had any problems since.
My buddy @ work is going through the same thing and he said @ the next price drop he is switching. his third 360 was dropped off @ fedex today.
There’s a reason why you have been through 5 Xboxs. You love Xbox. What else in life would you go through the hassel of sending off and waiting for? It sux that they crap out so frequent, but when you actually make the PS3 your main gaming system, you’ll be crawling back to the 360 in 2 weeks.
After you’ve beaten the 4 possibly 5 good PS3 games, you will want to get back on LIVE and play with your buddies. Just wait until you have to deal with the PSN and you’ll see how its worth it to go through the red ring problems….
the jasper is a brand new xbox with a new motherboard that pulls the heat away from the GPU xbox thinks they figured out The red ring stuff so xbox should now be on you list again
And they say SONY’s PS3 is too expensive…

that sucks, but I got my xbox about 1 year after it launched so I have the original chip set and I still have the same one, I know its hard to believe. I keep mine on top of our entertainment system so it gets very good ventilation. I have not had it over heat, and I have left it on for over 12 hours, I think the key is to keep it in the open so it gets lots on air. or its because I live in Michigan and our house is 69 in the winter and 72 in the summer, thats in the house outside its in the teens in the winter and in the 80′s in the summer.
Same exact thing happened to me. Had to pay 90 dollars to get it fixed. The “E 74″ error is the new Red Ring. Very disappointed it happened, but I have to much invested in the 360 to give up on it. I’ll also be getting a PS3 when the price drops.

I must admit that I too am on my 7th XBOX 360. Call me a glutton for punishment or whatever.
However, I am still playing on my original PS3 and have logged nearly equal playing time on both consoles. If only PSN were equal to XBOX Live, which it isn’t. Though I will admit that they are getting closer with each update. I would have long since got rid of my XBOX 360.
I only bash Sony/PS3 because they should be doing more to support their console. They barely advertise, and go off on tangents (like Home and Photo app) when they should be SOLELY working on improving the PSN.
Home is a complete and utter waste of Sony developers time. This was no doubt created at the behest of some executives wife/girlfriend. It has effeminate undertones written all over it. I fully imagine whoever is in charge of the vision of the Playstation Network telling his wife/girlfriend that they are looking to add in-game cross chat and party invites to the PSN, and they roll their eyes and say something like “… oh, but can’t we have pretty pictures and Unicorns?” And that executive immediately redirects all efforts to something totally unimportant to Playstation gamers to gain favor with their wife/girlfriend.
Home is a joke and a waste of time.
Did you really buy a Playstation to sit in a virtual Bowling Alley waiting in a long line to play bowling?!?!? Bowling?!?!? This isn’t the Wii and you are not elderly/kids.
Oh, and how about the legendary comment from Sony to the effect that all games released after January 2009 must have trophies. 50 Cent Blood on the Sand (a really good game surprisingly) has NO as in ZERO trophy support! Why did Sony allow this game to proceed to certification and release if there was no trophy support?!?!?! It’s stuff like this that bugs me.
Mine did that on the 27th. An Elite console which was brand new after being returned after my another E74 error. my warranty has expired too.
