Let a Notch Loose on Your Belt

After being bombarded with a barrage of games these past few weeks we finally get a week off unless all you have been looking forward to is Sonic Unleashed.  In short, the following games have been taking up most of our time and yours too.

Call of Duty: World at War

Left4Dead

Fallout 3

Fable II

Socom Confrontation

Dead Space

Gears of War 2

Guitar Hero World Tour

Rock Band 2

…and that’s just a few of the games that have been released.  That is a total of $511.00 in just a couple weeks.  If you were smart you would have traded some of those games towards the new games, in case this were to happen again some other options for you would be Playswitch where you can sell your games towards other games.  Or take advantage of deals like Game HQ’s Black Friday sale taking place the day after Thanksgiving.  If you use the code “HCFriday” you get an additional 10% off on that day on some extremely discounted price games.

Happy Monday!

A new week begins!

How was everyone’s weekend? Did you experience any amazing videogaming experiences?

For myself, I finished up the story in Mirror’s Edge and began doing some of the speed runs and time trials. The time trials in particular are nice because you don’t have to deal with the game’s clunky fighting mechanics against enemies. You have a start point, and an end point. Get there as fast as you can. Figuring out the best path is a rewarding exercise. Getting the best rating for each time trial, however, requires a level of perfection that I may not have the patience to deal with.

I also played through the Death Toll campaign in Left 4 Dead. Truly an amazing game, but the final standoff at the end required four tries before we made it through. Trying to sneak past a witch is a pleasingly tense experience. I still haven’t tried the versus multiplayer mode, but will probably get to that once I beat the co-op campaigns a few times.

Also, I began catching up on The Office using the new Netflix feature on the dashboard. Hilariously funny, but unbelievably awkward.

So what did you do this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

First Impressions: Left4Dead

Thanks to the kind folks at Valve I was able to get my hands on Left4Dead a day early, which really wasn’t that early as it turned out that 2 others from our community had the game last night as well.  After a straight two hours of game play I can farely say that Left4Dead has fully exceeded my expectations.  My only recommendation thus far is if you play on any mode other than normal is it’s imperative that you have a full squad of 4 players to play with.  Read more after the jump…

Left4Dead Impressions

Okay so this isn’t a review because the game isn’t released yet but the demo is and it was launched yesterday on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

In the demo you can play cooperatively with 3 of your friends, each taking the role of one of the surviving four humans left in this city.  The demo starts you on a rooftop at a weapons cache and you must make your way from safe zone to safe zone.  Each time I played the demo the experiance was different thanks to the AI director who ensures that your experiance matches your play.

The demo is chaotic and frenzied, the infected come from all over.  There are different varients of the infected as well each with unique characteristics in how they interact with you.  The demo truly has some scary moments, in particular the Witch.  If you hear a woman crying, beware that close by is a witch and if disturbed she will do some damage to you and your crew.

Unfortunately the demo is so short that it is going to leave you wanting which I am sure are the intentions of the developers.  I have heard mixed reviews on this game, mostly from people whom I knew probably wouldn’t like it however I must say that my appetite for zombie survival was only fueled by the short demonstration of this beautifully crafted game.  It may actually pull me away from Fallout 3 for awhile.  Oh Teh Noz!

Left 4 Dead Designer Insisted on Split-Screen

Just when I think Valve can’t do any more to make me love them… (insert awkward, romantic sigh here)

Left 4 Dead lead designer Michael Booth spoke to MTV’s Multiplayer Blog about the necessity of split-screen in such a co-op driven game, while lamenting it’s exclusion from so many of today’s titles.  And I quote:

“It took…[pause]…a while to get everyone on board with … ‘yes, it really needs cooperation, so, yes, it’s worth the huge investment to make split-screen work.’”

From the bottom of the collective hearts of everyone who still has friends show up and then have to stop playing Call of Duty and pop in Halo 3... again… so they can join…  Thank you, Mr. Booth.  We love you.  And your zombies.

Left 4 Dead Versus Mode Roundup

Left 4 Dead will be the game to scratch my first person shooter itch this holiday season. Built for co-op, the game also features a multiplayer mode allowing players to take turns playing as survivors, and then as zombies. A bunch of sites have posted impressions of this multiplayer mode. The game is scheduled to be released November 18th.
