Thanks Nintendo-For The Playstation

snes_cd-romBack in December of 1992 Nintendo Power released it’s monthly magazine to it’s readers and inside was a little surprise…The Super Nintendo was going to compete with the Sega Genesis that was ever so popular and gaining steam on it’s competition with it’s Sega CD.  How was Nintendo going to do this?  They had formed a partnership with Sony to create the Super Nintendo CD-Rom system that would boast ” a custom 32-bit processor”.  The agreement with Sony didn’t last long as relations disintegrated. Nintendo was convinced that the world was not satisfied with 16 bits and that it was necessary to upgrade to the next generation of console gaming so they eventually partnered with Phillips to bring this new system.  Of course Nintendo didn’t announce it’s new partnership with Phillips until after Sony had announced their partnership with Nintendo, catching Sony off guard.

Sony and Nintendo did eventually patch things up and got back to work on the Super Nintendo CD but that didn’t last long. Nintendo decided that a CD-Rom based system would be impractical due to long load times and eventually dumped the idea.  Sony also saw the shelf life of the Super Nintendo as short and they too did not want to continue with their arrangement.

With the constant indecision of Nintendo and Sony, agreements were off and Sony decided to pursue developing a CD-Rom based gaming system ultimately deeming it the Playstation.  Upon release the Sony Playstation sold 300,000 consoles in the first 30 days.  Hitting the market head-on the Playstation became a household name, and still is today.

So in short, all you Sony fanboys out there have someone to thank.  The top selling video game console in the world today is the grandfather of your Playstation 3.  Thanks Nintendo for not using any foresight.

I hate Nintendo of today for what they have done to gaming all for the sake of money.

It’s a business though so it’s to be expected, but still.

I’m surprised that more people didn’t know this.

Oh and Drew… you used “That didn’t last long” twice, poor writing my friend.

I wonder what would of happened if nintendo or sony never made it. Who would of take their place? Who would Microsoft be fighting against?

i’m going to use the old virtue of “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” and say sucks to be nintendo (or maybe not-lol)

Okay….I thought that sony helped nintendo by sharing the CD rom stuff…..And then nintendo stabbed sony in the butt….

well there is a portion to the tale missing
it’s not entirely nintendo stabbing sony in the back.. but sony wanted a majority cut of the software sales.. which was not happening for nintendo
i still can’t believe who the real loser was here though.. sega,
they set the stage perfectly with the genesis.. if it wasnt for their insane amount of hardware addons the saturn could have been what the playstation was but better
so it goes to show you.. hardware upgrades aren’t always the best option even though its cutting edge technology.. the hardcore alienates the masses.. and the masses decide the winning console

no no NO, actually, we owe EVERYTHING, to mr Ken Kuturagi, the playsaton, was HIS idea, sony didnt think that videogames were a good thing at first, but ken knew the CEO personally, so he had his support, everyone i know kens last year might not have been a great one, but without him, we wouldnt have any of this,…..we owe him alot……:) mr Ken Kuturagi, MY HERO.

Nintendo has only done the same thing Sony did all those years back – make gaming casual and “cool”

Your site is starting to take the title of Xbox360defenseforce from 1up.com Blu-ray failing and the Ps3 failing my god you are just some rapid 360 fanboy trying to reassure himself that the 360 is worth it.

How the Wii is the grandfather of the PS3 when Nintendo ultimately had no contributions to the final Playstation product is beyond me. Let me guess, you’re a Nintendo fanboy?

This is old news. I bought/read a book back in 1993 called Game Over by David Sheff, it’s all in there about it. Sony and Nintendo got together to make a SNES CD system to compete with the Sega CD/Mega CD, but they fell out over the software rights or something. Sony went alone and released the PlayStation. Ironically, the Sega CD/Mega CD was actually made by Sony. Strange how things work out. I think the book is still in print, I think it gets updated once in a while.

    NINTENDO FANBOY!!!!!!!!!!!

you’re just a pissed off neo-christian who doesn’t even know shit,

Actually, the story to my knowledge is true but some things are left out, and nintendo sort of betrayed sony by hiring a developer for their system that was outside of asia, not to mention sony was almost finished with the add-on when nintendo pulled the stunt. The neo geo, nes, ps1, ps2(and possibly ps3 soon) are some of my favorite consoles and the snes is sort of good too. Maybe it was better this way, If everything went smoothly the playstation would possibly not have been as great as it was due to nintendo censorship and the playstation would not have lasted as long as it did because add-ons in general in the gaming industry don’t have a long shelf life. I own ps1, ps2, ps3, and psp consoles, I also own dreamcast, genesis, n64, nes(somewhere in my house),and snes so I am not a sony fanboy, it is just that sony’s line of games appeal to me more than the competitors for the most part.

    WOW BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least for the kids that just started playing videogames…every other gamer should know it by now….

BTW, to all of you that didnt know, dont believe its true or whatever…. its a good thing to read something about your hobbie, not just going to forums only to bash [insert console name] just because you own its counterpart…

PS: Im 30 and Ive been a gamer since Im 6.

    Old news, etc…

Don’t fool yourself, though. The PS1 was pretty terrible, and I understand why Nintendo resisted CD based games and stuck with Cartridges. Load times were so terrible, max field of vision for most games didn’t reach much farther than 4 or 5 feet. Sure, FMV is nice, but not at the expense of the actual game. Sony really should have waited for the DVD. The PS2 was a much, much better console.
