HCG Review: Legion

Posted January 26th, 2010 in Articles, Movies, Reviews by Drew Koehler

Legion was released last Friday in theatres everywhere.  The premise of the movie is that Michael the Archangel comes to earth to save a woman and her baby from being killed by God’s wrath as He passed judgment on the world for it’s sin.  The movie had some interesting moments that I am unable to explain without giving away some of the plot.

“Continue Reading” to find out what I thought about Legion and why I didn’t like it. *Spoiler Alert*
Michael and Gabriel, God’s archangel generals, were given an order to destroy the human race because God was tired of our sinful disobedience.  Michael decides to disobey God, come down to earth and cut off his wings.  He later claims in the movie that when God created humans He told the angels to love them.  Michael said that he was unable to stop loving humans even when God had lost hope in our race.  So Michael realizes that in order to save humans he must save this specific child of an unwed mother named “Charlie” to save the human race.  God sends his legion of angels to earth to kill all the humans but more specifically this baby who has yet to be born.  The angels possess humans as they make their attempt at finding this child.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Charlie and her “I’m a friend but want to be more-dumb redneck kid” named Jeep are working in a diner with Jeep’s father played by Dennis Quaid.  The diner is far into the middle of nowhere and somehow people still patronize the place.  The cook is a run down Army vet with a prosthetic hand who seems to be the only person with some knowledge of God but without explanation of how he ended up there (played by Roc, the garbage man from that one show).  There are two sets of customers in the diner who end up being a part of the story, a husband, wife and scantily clad young adult daughter who’s car broke down and Jeep is fixing it.  In addition to this unpredictable crew there is the token black guy “used to be gangster” who is making his way to the city for a custody battle.  Look, I am calling it like I see it.

The craziness starts when the TV goes out and they can’t get a signal.  Jeep notices a cloud of something on the horizon coming from both directions, and the creepy old lady from the commercial visits for a meal of raw meat and flies.  The old lady attacks the broke-down-car father and bites him on the neck.  Everyone panics and tries to leave with the ambulatory father in the gangster’s car when they are walled in by the cloud of you guessed it, flies.  So they go back to the diner and hold-up there when the power goes out. Oh no!

Michael the archangel shows up, tells them they must save the baby and gives them a ton of weapons to defend the diner against the angel-possessed humans that attack like zombies.  Some creepy moments happen, people argue and try to escape then the baby is born.  Gabriel comes down to fight Michael as Jeep, baby and surprisingly-energetic-for-

just-having-a-baby baby’s Momma.  Gabriel kills Michael and goes after the couple.  They crash their car and survive somehow without any contusions and make a run for it.  Gabe catches up and is about to kill the baby when Michael shows back up (with wings) and slices him in the chest with a sword.  ”How can this be?” exclaims Gabriel as Michael explains that Gabriel gave God what He wanted while Michael gave Him what He needed.  Huh?

No explanation of why the baby must survive.  The couple drives away with guns in their car and baby in lap “but aren’t the angels gone and God satisfied?” um, yeah probably but I don’t know.  And if this review makes you feel all lost and confused inside then you basically just saw the movie.

Flaws:  We know that God won’t destroy the earth without first calling up the believers.  God’s angels will not defect again after the fall of Satan.  God hasn’t lost hope in the human race, He loves us very much and wants to love us back but WE prevent that from happening because of our sin.  God forgives us of our sin when we confess Jesus Christ as our Lord.  Angels won’t possess people (it’s not one of the plagues).  No baby on earth is going to save the human race, aside from Jesus who isn’t a baby anymore, not since 2000 or so years ago.

Verdict:  PASS

  1. Sounds like the big steaming pile I thought it would be.

  2. I agree that none of the events in the movie could happen; but then, it *is* a movie. It doesn’t seem to be portraying itself as the Gospel According to Hollywood. I mean, think of it this way: we *know* that pointy-hatted wizards don’t really fight fiery monsters in the bowels of ancient dwarven mines, but that doesn’t matter when you’re in a dark theater, popcorn in hand, surround speakers booming.

That being said, I’m sure I’d hate this movie too. I already saw it many years ago when it was called The Prophecy, and I didn’t like it then (although Viggo Mortensen played the creepiest movie Satan ever, in my humble opinion).

  3. bah, this movie really was one of those movies that as soon as you saw the previews for it you knew it was going to be bad. Well, I got that impression anyway. Thanks for the review because now my suspicions are correct, I won’t have to spend what… 8 to 11 dollars just to be disappointed. thanks Drew!

  4. It’s media like this that gets unbelievers so confused about Christianity. The sad reality is that someone might believe this is true. This movie brings no Glory to God. I will not be spending any money on this film. If anything I will suggest to people not to view it, and express that this is not how God intends to treat His people. I will express this only to bring Glory to God.

  5. Your wrong; God indeed has lost hope in humanity to imbrace His love on their own will alone. When you read Romans 3:1-20 and Romans 9 our condition is so horrible that we have to be chosen to choose Jesus as our savior. However, I am completely with you on panning this movie for its twisted and theology.

  6. *Big spoilers.*
I saw the movie, it didn’t make a lick of sense. I don’t really understand why her baby was so important, and the whole world just invaded them like zombies. The way it ends is odd too, yay the baby lives, so the extermination stops!

The movie really needed a lot more thought put into it.

I won’t be seeing it. 25 F words is 25 too many, and that’s just for starters.

  8. Hmm I don’t even remember hearing the F-bomb. Maybe I just wasn’t paying attention.

  9. Oh wait, ya I think I remember hearing it once. But I those words usually don’t stick with me, I mainly remember the action scenes the best.

  10. The saddest part about this movie being released to the public is that there are a lot of uninformed people out there who will see this and think it makes complete sense. Fiction like this will only cloud the understanding for non-believers and very young/new believers. Mature believers can just sit back, roll their eyes and chuckle as the movie time and time again COMPLETELY clouds the truth about God, but there will be many people that are misled about the nature of God, angles and humanity because of this movie.

It’s sad that there can’t be more TRULY Christian movies released to the public that will capture peoples interest an attention. It’s too bad because i think there are a lot of stores in the Bible (especially the Old testament) that could be turned into cool Hollywood movies.
