PS3 Redesign Coming Soon?

PlayStation LifeStyle is claiming that Sony is set to announce a PlayStation 3 redesign at E3 in early June. They say there is no official word on what the redesign could be, but the two strongest possibilities are:

1) A new silver PS3 with the same hardware design as the current model

2) A PS3 Slim of some sort

Releasing a new silver-colored model and calling it a redesign would be foolish at best, so I lean toward the second option. Of course, this is just a rumor, so take this information with a grain of salt. To be fair, though, PlayStation LifeStyle isn’t the only gaming news outlet making this claim. But what interests me most of all is this: would you folks without a PS3 be willing to throw down for one if Sony introduced a new slimmer design?

  1. Knowing Sony, what I could see them doing is introducing a slimmer PS3 that, oh by the way, also has PS2 backwards compatibility. I would be angry if this were so.

  2. Only if they also redesign the price tag!!

  3. @Dan Davis: I’m with you, there. However, it might be worth it if they added Ps2 backwards compatibility. I doubt they will, though…

  5. Guys, you know they aren’t going to pony up more money to add a feature which, to be fair, should have remained intact from the beginning (and in all models). Plus, the point of introducing a slimmer model is to cut down on production costs — adding backwards compatibility back into the mix would hurt that effort.

That being said, I would love to see backwards compatibility. I might even be willing to replace my current PS3 just to get it. But the possibility of BC happening now is as likely as me growing two additional arms.

No, wait, I’d rather have the arms. Screw the compatibility!

  6. no, I don’t feel the need to get one I am perfectly happy with my 360. besides there are only like two games that I would even want play. I personally would not get one even if it were only $200, because like I said before most of the games out there are mulitplayform and the ones that aren’t I don’t feel the need to play. the only ones that I would like to play are killzone and MGS4.

  8. If they were willing to sell this redesign at a cheaper price, since production costs would go down, it would be worth it.

  9. Hmmm. As cool as it would be, I would be angry. I just got my PS3 in January, and would hate to see a new model come out right after I spent $400 on this one.
