Community Game Night: Left4Dead

Based off of the popularity of the Playdate we will be starting game nights each weekend and throughout the week.

Our first game night will be this Friday at 9Est-playing Left4Dead either Co-op or Versus.  If you would like to participate in this game night, please sign up here with a comment.  Include your gamertag as well so that we can invite you.  This game night is INVITE ONLY so you must sign up.  If you are willing to host a room as well please include that in your comment.

Sega Genesis Top Ten #6

nhl95_leadOh.  The Sega Genesis.  I still remember the Christmas that I got my Genesis.  I couldn’t put down the controller.  I was obsessed with the speedy Sonic.  And now for the top ten decided by you guys/gals.

6.  NHL 95

NHL 95 was developed by EA Canada and was released in June of 1995.  For the first time in the series an entire season would be played along with the creation of your own player.  A few other features were added including the drop pass and the laying down on the ice to block shots.  The EA NHL series has always been the go to game for console gaming.  They simply are the best in hockey games.

For adding the ability to play an entire season and letting me create a player under my name to let me live out the dream of playing with Sakic and Gretzky (even if it was just in my basement), NHL 95 gets the best NHL game of the 16 bit era and number six on this list.

DLC for L4D? OMGoodness!!

Valve will reveal downloadable content for its popular zombie-fueled shooter Left 4 Dead, “shortly.” According to a video podcast with Kotaku, Chet Faliszek, one of the game’s writers, confirmed that the team was looking to add Versus functionality to the Dead Air and Death Toll campaigns and to release brand new scenarios.

Faliszek also stated that, unlike Team Fortress 2, Valve plans to release DLC for the Xbox 360 and PC at the same time. During the recording, which took place on December 15, Faliszek speculated that DLC news would be releases before Christmas Day but said the announcement could be delayed due to the press team going on vacation. “We’ll have an announcement shortly, I don’t know exactly when.”

No pricing details for either platforms were discussed.

Okay, no matter the price I am pretty sure that I will be buying it!

Sega Genesis Top Ten #7

Oh.  The Sega Genesis.  I still remember the Christmas that I got my Genesis.  I couldn’t put down the controller.  I was obsessed with the speedy Sonic.  And now for the top ten decided by you guys/gals.

7.  Vectorman

Released in 1995, Vectorman was completely rendered in 3D models even though it played like a side-scrolling platformer/shooter.  Think of Metroid but as a robot (orbot) made of balls.  Vectorman could transform into: a drill, a bomb and an aquatic from.  His guns were also upgradable.  All of these upgrades were found in TV like boxes hanging that Vectorman had to shoot multiple times to break open.  Vectorman was said to be Sega’s answer for Donkey Kong Country.  It certainly did have that smooth running feeling to it.  This game is considered to be one of the highest ranked Sega games every.  Vectorman did give way to a sequel in Vectorman 2.

There is not really much else to say about this game other than it was fast and adictive to play.

8.  Mortal Kombat

Mortal Combat was released in 1992 for a multitude of systems and was a direct response to Street Fighter II.  The d-pad was used to move the character and the user had five basic moves (high kick, low kick, high punch, low punch and block).  Beyond these basic moves were a set of special moves for each character the user decided to fight with.  These special moves were pulled off by completing a series of button presses.  When the opponent’s health meter is reduced to zero the player had the option to do a finishing move.  These finishing moves were completed by the same method as the special moves accept were more complicated and were very graphic (like ripping out the opponent’s spine).  Playable characters included: Johnny Cage, Kano, Liu Kang, Raiden, Scorpion, Sonya Blade and Sub-Zero.

Mortal Combat was such an awesome game.  Lots of blood and gore.  My friends and I would play this game for hours on end trying to figure out all the finishing moves.

For all the blood and being a great alternative to Street Fighter, Mortal Combat gets number 8 on our list.

Holiday Sale at Steam

BioShock is currently running for $5. The expansions to the original Half-Life, Opposing Force and Blue Shift, are priced at 99 cents. The Valve Complete Pack is currently at $75, as opposed to $99 normally. The classic Beyond Good & Evil is $7.50 right now. Grand Theft Auto IV is selling for $45.

There are a ton of savings going on right now, so use this opportunity to stock up on the games you missed out on, and get some newer games at a good price.

Resident Evil 5: Demo Impressions

re5Since us in the West got the cold shoulder from Capcom, acquiring the Resident Evil 5 demo was a bit of a difficult task. Fortunately I had said Demo land right in my lap recently and I thought I would offer up some impressions while we wait for it to hit us here in the West. The Demo offers two different levels for you to try out in the latest from Capcoms fabled Resident Evil series. Unfortunately the demo wasn’t online, so I was only able to play with the AI partner. I don’t pretend to be any sort of grizzled Resident Evil veteran, but I’m fairly familiar with the franchise and I’m sure I will pick most of it up. I’m not sure what version of the Demo this was in referring to the controls, so take my comments about them with a grain of salt.

Awesome Community Playdate!

Thanks Nintendo-For The Playstation

snes_cd-romBack in December of 1992 Nintendo Power released it’s monthly magazine to it’s readers and inside was a little surprise…The Super Nintendo was going to compete with the Sega Genesis that was ever so popular and gaining steam on it’s competition with it’s Sega CD.  How was Nintendo going to do this?  They had formed a partnership with Sony to create the Super Nintendo CD-Rom system that would boast ” a custom 32-bit processor”.  The agreement with Sony didn’t last long as relations disintegrated. Nintendo was convinced that the world was not satisfied with 16 bits and that it was necessary to upgrade to the next generation of console gaming so they eventually partnered with Phillips to bring this new system.  Of course Nintendo didn’t announce it’s new partnership with Phillips until after Sony had announced their partnership with Nintendo, catching Sony off guard.

Sony and Nintendo did eventually patch things up and got back to work on the Super Nintendo CD but that didn’t last long. Nintendo decided that a CD-Rom based system would be impractical due to long load times and eventually dumped the idea.  Sony also saw the shelf life of the Super Nintendo as short and they too did not want to continue with their arrangement.
