XBOX…NO ADS…..PLEASE?

by Robert Orcutt

Kinect-enabled ads will be coming to your XBOX console this fall.  The ads, called NUads, will allow customers of Xbox Live to choose ad-inspired adventures (ie: mini-games while you watch an associated ad) or ability to vote in some fashion on a product or service with mere gestures or voice commands.

Microsoft released the following video to demonstrate how this new ad ability will work.  Toyota, Unilever, and Samsung Mobile have already signed into advertising deals for the new ads on Xbox Live.

What’s your thoughts on the new Kinect-enabled ads?

I’m still struggling to understand why they need ads to fund a service that’s being funded by subscriptions? If they have ads why can’t they at least make online play free? I really don’t understand this. The “Sony Entertainment Network” (PSN) doesn’t have 1/4 of the ads that XBL does, and it doesn’t cost a thing.

From a marketing point of view, i think it’s brilliant to bring your customers into your ads interactively. From a customer point of view I could care less. I’d rather see less ads. I could really care less about watching them, much less interacting with them. That’s 2-3 minutes of my time that I’d rather do something else with.
