Microsoft Adding Real-Time Censoring to Xbox Live?

Ars Technica is reporting that Microsoft has aquired a patent for technology that allows them to analyze audio streams and replace inappropriate words with beeps, other noises, or silence. Everyone here obviously knows that Xbox Live isn’t exactly the most family friendly place in the world. Part of the reason this site exists is so we can find like-minded folks to play with online without hearing profanity and racial slurs every other word. This would be a welcome feature for many people, and make jumping into random games a more palatable proposition.

On the flip side, while there are certain words that pretty much everyone can agree are bad, there will certainly be instances where someone may get censored when, perhaps, they shouldn’t have. Microsoft will have to walk a fine line. They have already been criticized for not allowing words pertaining to Christianity in gamertags, and the word “gay” is also not allowed, regardless of whether or not it’s referring to homosexuality or something else. Will something similar happen to spoken words? Will the word “Jesus” be automatically bleeped out by Microsoft? I’m fairly certain that if Microsoft implemented this, it would be an option that the user could turn on or off, but it’s still something to think about.

I sure hope that this is true… It’s really annoying that all people do sometimes is curse.

    if they did censor Jesus…

It would really make it hard to share the gospel and have prayer meetings and the like. Kind of unnerving in that aspect.

I hope you can turn off the feature. I don’t like cursing, but to hear bleep everytime I play will get on my nerves that I like to talk about Jesus with out being cencored.

  4. SOG PATHFINDER

I would think we are years away from this being implemented and probably be a better method by then. I think it to be a step in the right direction, but agree with the issues of over stepping the censorship line.

This is great! I agree with SOG Pathfinder that this is years away from being implemented, but nonetheless it’s good news. And I am already tired of Microsoft censoring Christian names. For instance our squad in Chromehounds has to be Sons of xXGodXx instead of being legit.

As long as its optional to turn on and off then im alright with it, forcing censorship would not be right

I agree that this should be optional and I also agree that we probably won’t be seeing this for a very long time.
