Larger DSi is Indeed a Reality *Updated*

The rumors about a DSi with larger screens are true. Nintendo will release the DSi LL, featuring 4.2 inch screens—that’s about 93% larger than the DS Lite’s screens—on November 21 in Japan. To put that date in perspective, consider the release date for the original DSi: November 1, 2008. Yes, Nintendo is releasing a slightly upgraded DSi just one year after the DSi hit store shelves.

Nintendo says they created the DSi LL for those who complained that the DSi was not conducive to Internet browsing or playing music, due to small fonts. Keep in mind that the screens may be larger but they will display the same resolution as the original DSi. Most people shouldn’t notice a difference in picture quality, but tech nerds might notice a wee bit of blurriness on edges.

I don’t need larger screens so I’ll skip the DSi LL, but I imagine some of you might be interested in picking one up. Heck, some people will buy just about anything Nintendo sells. I bet some folks would buy a business suit textured with screens from every Super Mario Bros. game if it was sold at a reasonable price. Come to think of it, I might just buy that.

UPDATE 5:30 PM EST: Looks like the DSi XL, (the North American name of the DSi LL) will be Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. in early 2010. No set date just yet, but we’ll let you know what it is when it’s announced.

  1. Thing’s freaking huge.. The design, colors, size, pen, everything just screams “Senior Citizen Edition.” This is going to be great if Nintendo sells this as a side product to a specific market.. But if they really want to replace the DSi with this, it’s going to flop.

  2. To borrow from NeoAkira, kotaku member,

“‘The redesign comes at the request of customers who said they wanted a larger screen’”

How about the customers who said they wanted a DS2?”

They have been milking the DS forever, DS, DSLite, DSLite with new colors, DSi, now DSi LL. Yet through all that I’m still happy with my DS Phat!! Why? Because it hasn’t changed the actual system a bit!

  3. I liked the DS Phat to DS Lite transition, and I’m happy with my DSi, but I agree that it’s time to move on to a new hand-held console. Well, maybe not this minute. Give it a year or so.

  4. I want a PSP 2

Nintendo doesn’t cut it for me.

  5. It sounds interesting, the larger screen my be enough for me to pick up a DSi. I would still be keeping my DS lite though as I still enjoy playing GBA games. Is there any word on when it will be released in the UK yet?

  9. I’m actually a tiny bit interested in this. I have a ds lite, but the much larger screen would be really neat. Also, graphics are really low on my priority list, so a tiny bit more blurry wouldn’t be an issue.
